Recycled Home

Restoration Home ($29.95), a recent release by Ryland Peters & Small, explores the world of design-duo Mark and Susan Bailey. The Baileys see beauty in what most have come to see as trash: a vintage operating lamp becomes a dining room chandelier; industrial baking racks are repurposed as shoe trolleys; driftwood works as a headboard. For over twenty years, the Baileys have been the go-to team for well-designed rustic interiors for clients like Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen and Paul Smith.  Their first book, Restoration Home, celebrates things that are mismatched, imperfect, and abandoned stressing the four R’s -- rescue, repair, reuse and rethink. It’s a must-have for countless HauteIdeas!

Haute Stuff: Featured left is the work of British designer Lisa Watmough of Squint. Watmough creates bespoke and one-off pieces using new and vintage textile scraps. Her line includes sofas, wing-back chairs, ottomans, mirrors and Moroccan inspired poufs. In the US, fans of Squint can find her work at J. Roaman. Prices range from $3,500-$15,000.

Try this HauteIdea: Want this haute look? The Baileys suggest giving old floor lamps a new lease on life (and a punch of color) by wrapping them in vintage fabric. Consider using textiles to hide the flaws of an older picture frame, damaged sofa legs or even dresser drawer pulls. To keep fabric in place, try the tried-and-true art of decoupage… it’s not just for paper!
